  16. Coconut Oil - 3 tbsp
  17. Water - as needed

PREPARATION:

You can prepare Meen Mulakittathu with any fish of your choice. I am using fresh baby sharks. You can follow the same quantity of ingredients for any fish.

Soak the Kudampuli (kokum) in hot water before starting the cooking process. Soaking kokum in water helps in extracting the pulp which gives fish curry its tangy and sour flavor. Some people use tomatoes also for the tangy kick.

Heat a Mannchatty. People used these earthen wares in ancient times because it will give that earthy intense flavor and it also helps in retaining the essential nutrients and minerals in the food. Once the chatty is hot add coconut oil for the traditional taste. Add 3 tbsp of oil and add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Let them pop off. Now add sliced shallots, ginger, garlic, and green chillies. Saute until light brown in color. Add some curry leaves. Now add the masala powders. Turmeric powder, kashmiri red chilli powder, normal red chilli powder, coriander powder, and fenugreek powder. Saute them until the raw smell of the powders goes off. If you are not using green chillies for the curry, you can adjust the amount of normal chilli powder according to your level of spiciness. Add water as needed for the gravy of your curry. Now add the soaked kudampuli and salt. Let it boil well on high flame. Check for salt and add if needed. Now add the fish to it. After adding the fish and it starts to boil, close the lid and cook it over low flame. Fish doesn't require too much cooking time. Cook for up to 10 minutes.

Check if the gravy is thick and the oil has separated on top. Turn off the flame and drizzle some coconut oil on top of the curry and it is ready to be served.
Fish curry when rests out gets tastier as the masala goes deep into the fish.
Serve it with some Kappa puzhukku or Choru or Vellappam, it goes well with everything.

Hope you will all try out the spicy Meen Mulakittathu from The Perfect Cook Book and enjoy it with your friends and family.
